STUDIOLO 2026
From 26 to 26 June 2026
The Daniel Katz Gallery is pleased to be exhibiting at the latest installment of
Studiolo, held this year at Westminster Abbey on Friday 26th June.
We will be presenting a remarkable gilt bronze figural term representing the ancient
philosopher Plato, which has been newly attributed to the celebrated 17th-century Royal
Sculptor to Charles I, Hubert Le Sueur (c.1580-1658). Cast in London, most likely in
the 1630s, this extraordinary bronze would have originally formed part of an elaborate
chimneypiece in a noble or royal domestic setting.
This rare work exemplifies exceptional craftsmanship, combining refined modelling
with intricate chasing and rich mercury gilding. Its contemplative figure, depicted
clutching his beard, reflects both the humanist and classical traditions of the
Renaissance in early Baroque European art.
Boasting a distinguished provenance, having passed through prominent collections
including those of the Dukes of Richmond, the Stonor family and fashion icon, Hubert
de Givenchy, the bronze will be exhibited at Westminster in close proximity to Le
Sueur’s outstanding tombs of both the Duke of Richmond (1628) and Buckingham
(1634). This event marks a unique opportunity for our sculpture to be studied, bringing
together prominent art historians and museum experts for a focused discussion.
The term will be exhibited alongside a wonderful French polychrome terracotta relief
depicting St. Martin and the Beggar by the great French 19th century sculptor,
Emmanuel Frémiet (1824-1910). Although dating to approximately 1880, it is inspired
by illuminated Medieval manuscripts such as those contained within the Abbey.
