The painter Jules Breton (1827-1906) was one of the most famous artists of his time. He commissioned his portrait at the height of his fame and after having seen Carriès’ sculptures at the Salon de la Société des Beaux-Arts de 1881. This prestigious commission marks the beginning of Carriès’ recognition.
